Building Outdoor Fire Pit

Posted on

Backyard fire pits are one of the most popular of all landscaping features. They are attractive, functional and provide an outdoor gathering place. Ideally, a fire pit is constructed from fireproof material on a flat, level area at least 25 feet from a house or tree. Fire pits are strictly governed by local building codes. A built-in fire pit is a glorified campfire, with sturdy walls of stone that help contain the flames and heat. That’s especially important in the parts of the country where there’s a risk of brush fires. So the first task in building any fire pit is checking local codes on open flames. Lay out your pavers in a circle in the approximate size and shape of your fire pit. Fire pits should be about 36 to 44 inches in diameter. Our surrounding patio is made from recycled rubber pavers. We laid the fire pit stones out to the correct dimension then pulled the pavers out of and away from the pit. The building materials used in this outdoor space keep a natural and earthy feel: the crushed stone underneath the fire pit, the rustic picnic table atop the paver patio and the natural stone fire circle. Mixing it by hand also seemed like a backbreaker. So I abandoned the idea of traditional masonry. Investigating chimeas and steel fire rings at a nearby home center, my wife and I discovered the Fossil Stone Fire Pit from Natural Concrete Products, a $663 kit of concrete blocks and a steel fire ring. If your fire pit will mostly be enjoyed by you and your family, or if you prefer a more rustic look, a modern fire pit built out of retaining wall blocks or a timesaving fire pit project kit may be ideal.
